Two quotations for clean agent suppression in the same 60 square metre server room, four weeks apart. One at 48,000 dirhams. One at 126,000. The client assumed somebody was overcharging.
Nobody was. The cheaper one had not priced the room.

In short: the agent and cylinders are the part everyone compares and rarely the part that separates quotations. Room sealing, ventilation interlocks and pressure relief are the swing factors, and none of them can be assessed without a site visit. What the money is actually spent on
A clean agent installation breaks into parts that behave very differently on price.
- The agent and cylinders. Sized from room volume and the design concentration for the agent. Predictable, and the part everyone compares.
- Detection and control. Cross-zoned detection, a releasing panel, manual release and abort stations, warning signage and sounders.
- Pipework and nozzles. Calculated by hydraulic flow, not drawn by eye. Nozzle placement follows the calculation.
- Room integrity works. Sealing penetrations, dampers on ventilation, door closers and drop seals, and pressure relief so the room does not over-pressurise on discharge.
- Interlocks. Shutting down air handling, closing dampers, releasing door holders. Often the fiddliest part on a live site.
- Testing and documentation. Discharge simulation, integrity testing, and the record pack the authority expects.
The first item is the one compared between quotations. The fourth is the one that separates them.

Why the room decides the price
A gaseous system works by holding an extinguishing concentration in the protected space for a required hold time. If the room leaks, the concentration falls, and the system discharges expensively into a space that then continues to burn.
Rooms leak in ordinary, invisible ways. Cable and pipe penetrations above the ceiling. Gaps around door frames. Raised floor voids connected to neighbouring rooms. Ventilation that keeps running. None of these show on a floor plan, and none can be assessed without visiting.

That is why the two figures at the top differ. The cheaper quotation assumed a sealed room. The dearer one had walked it, found penetrations and an unsealed floor void, and priced the sealing works and the interlock changes needed to make the system function.

Then there is the cost of keeping it
Installation is a single payment. The system carries a running cost afterwards that buyers routinely leave out of the comparison.
Cylinders need periodic weighing or pressure checking, the control equipment needs maintaining, and cylinders carry hydrostatic test intervals under which they are removed, tested and refitted. Room integrity does not stay constant either: every cable pulled through a wall after handover is a new leak, which is why integrity should be retested rather than assumed after any building work.
Recharge after a discharge is a separate and significant cost, and the agent may need ordering rather than sitting on a shelf.

Budgeting across the life of the system
Comparing installations on the installed figure alone understates the difference between them, because a clean agent system carries costs on a cycle rather than once.
Four items to put into any comparison over, say, ten years:
- Cylinder requalification. Hydrostatic testing at set intervals, during which cylinders are removed, tested and refitted. That is labour and temporary loss of protection as well as test cost.
- Periodic integrity retesting. Especially in a room that sees cabling changes, where the enclosure degrades between tests.
- Routine maintenance. Cylinder weights and pressures, releasing panel, detection, actuation path.
- Recharge provision. Not a certainty, but a discharge means agent, labour and downtime, and the agent may need ordering rather than sitting on a shelf.
None of that argues for a cheaper installation. It argues the opposite: a system installed into a properly sealed room needs fewer remedial interventions across its life, while a marginal enclosure generates repeat integrity failures and repeat sealing work that is far more expensive retrofitted than done once at installation.
Ask each bidder to set out the expected cycle costs alongside the installed price. A contractor who can do that has thought about the system's life. One who cannot has quoted an event.
The stance

When comparing quotations, the question that sorts them is simple: did you visit the room, and what did you find. A contractor who answers with specifics about penetrations, the floor void and the ventilation arrangement has done the work. One who answers that the room looked fine has priced a drawing.
The honest trade-off: a properly surveyed installation with sealing works costs materially more up front, and on a genuinely tight, purpose-built room the survey will confirm little needs doing and the premium buys you a piece of paper. That happens, and it is not wasted, but it is a real cost. On an ordinary converted office room with a raised floor and cable trays through three walls, the cheaper quotation is not a saving. It is a system that will discharge and not work.
