Foam suppression is what you install when water alone will not save you - fuel stores, tank farms, hangars, warehouses full of flammable liquids. It works by smothering a burning fuel surface under a foam blanket that cuts off the vapour. But that only happens if three things are healthy at once: the concentrate, the bladder tank that pushes it, and the proportioner that mixes it. Let any one drift and the system can run, discharge, and still fail to make effective foam.
That silent failure mode is why foam maintenance is a specialist discipline, not a walk-past inspection. Here is what actually needs testing.

Why Foam Systems Fail Quietly
The dangerous thing about a foam system is that most of its failure modes are invisible from the outside:
- Concentrate degrades in the tank - it can settle, separate or become contaminated, so a full tank is not a working tank.
- Proportioning drifts - if the mix ratio wanders, the discharged solution is too weak or too rich to form an effective blanket, even with water and concentrate both flowing.
- The bladder can fail - a ruptured bladder or corroded shell stops the tank delivering at the right rate.

The Bladder Tank
The bladder tank is a pressure vessel holding a flexible bladder full of concentrate. When the system operates, incoming water pressurises the shell and squeezes the bladder, forcing concentrate out to meet the water flow.
Because it is a pressure vessel holding a chemical, maintenance checks:
- Bladder integrity - a leak or rupture cripples concentrate delivery
- Shell condition - corrosion on a pressure vessel is a safety issue in its own right
- Valves and pressure components - a stuck valve can stop the tank discharging on demand
A tank that passes these checks is one you can trust to actually deliver its charge when called.
The Proportioner
The proportioner is the mixer. Its whole job is to inject concentrate into the water stream at the designed ratio so the discharge is the right strength. Get that ratio wrong and the foam is ineffective regardless of how much concentrate and water are moving.
Testing confirms the proportioner delivers concentrate at the designed proportion across the flow range, typically by measuring the actual concentration of the discharged solution. A proportioner that has worn, blocked or drifted is a common reason a system that appears to operate still cannot control a flammable-liquid fire.
Concentrate Testing - the Part People Skip
Foam concentrate is the active ingredient, and it is not fill-and-forget. It should be sampled and laboratory-tested periodically to confirm it still meets its performance specification - checked for correct properties and for degradation, sedimentation or contamination, then topped up or replaced if it no longer performs.
The key point: you cannot judge concentrate by looking at a full tank. A system can sit fully charged with degraded concentrate and produce foam that will not hold a blanket. Sample testing is the only way to know. This same rigour applies to the flammable-liquid hazards common in warehouse fire protection, where the stored goods dictate the suppression strategy.
Testing Without Wasting the Charge
A fair question from any facility manager: does maintenance mean discharging a tank of expensive concentrate every visit? No. Competent foam maintenance proves the system through a combination of methods:
- Inspection and function testing of valves, tank, pipework, strainers and actuation
- Sample testing for concentrate quality - drawing a sample, not emptying the tank
- Planned flow or proportioning tests where required, managing concentrate use and discharge handling
You verify the system will work without needlessly dumping its charge.
